Akaroa is 85 kilometres from the city of Christchurch in the South Island on Highway 75. Visitors to Akaroa may travel by car or coach. Making the trip by bicycle is also possible for the fit. The Journey takes about one and a half hours directly by car. One passes the 20,000 hectare lagoon of Lake Ellesmere on the way to Akaroa.

In winter, the road may be icy and unpassable.
